Incrementalists vs. Completionists

Site Home : Random Thoughts

There is a wonderful entry on Rands in Repose about Incrementalists and Completionists.

It's really dead on. This is a phenomenon probably more common in software development than any other type of creative occupation, due to the very high flexibility of the product.

I am the consumate incrementalist - I never really saw it that way, I thought I was just being pragmatic. But it's true that when I'm faced with a problem, I think about it very tactically (how can I solve this problem as quickly as possible) than strategically (how can I solve this class of problems, once and for all).

This usually brings about a fairly quick solution, albeit specialized. Needless to say, folks in production love that.
